Challenge | During one of the most stressful times of the year, how can farm managers optimize their team’s logistics?
Process | Through contextual research with various stakeholders in the complex system of grain harvesting and delivery, we discovered that efficiency quickly drops when the right vehicles are not in the right place at the right time.
Design | We iterated through a low-cost system that allows managers to see real-time locations of drivers. Additionally, we explored ways to determine wait times that could delay and derail operations.
Outcome | Using a navigation and tracking app, drivers’ locations are reported to their team members, along with estimate wait times at grain elevators. Knowing this, the manager can make improved in-field logistical decisions.
This app (iOS/Android) was created at the John Deere Technology Innovation Center from 2015 to 2016, and was awarded the John Deere Enterprise Innovation Award and was a finalist for the Prometheus Award.
