Challenge | What role can augmented reality and instructional design play in improving how students perform tasks with physical objects, such as those found in STEM laboratories?
Process | Through an extensive literature review for my doctoral qualifying exam, I uncovered that old and new approaches to instructional design ought to be combined.
Design | Using pre-captured images and digital augmented overlays, the instructions intuitively guide learners through the steps of a lab.
Outcome (anticipated) | With the future incorporation of feedback and instructions that encourage deeper cognitive processing, this design will not only increase students’ speed and accuracy with such labs, but also their ability to subsequently remember the necessary steps.
This demonstration was designed and developed in the Problem Solving and Educational Technology Lab in 2013.
